vitaly 3 The Free State Symphony Orchestra will showcase a number of the principal players and their skills on Saturday, 22 September 2018, together with the Odeion String Quartet and guest piano virtuoso Vitaly Pisarenko. Described by the New York Times as an “immensely gifted pianist … with prodigious technique, myriad shadings and scrupulous accuracy”, the Russian pianist is regarded as one of the finest young musicians of his generation.

Pisarenko is returning to South Africa for a series of recitals as well as concerts with local orchestras in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. This brilliant and evocative pianist will perform the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, opus 31 (Shostakovich) with Paul van Zuilenburg as the trumpet soloist.

The Odeion String Quartet with Samson Diamond (violin), Sharon de Kock (violin), Jeanne-Louise Moolman (viola) and Anmari van der Westhuizen (cello) are the soloists in Elgar’s masterpiece, Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and Strings, which was composed to show off the players’ virtuosity.

The programme conclude with the Sinfonia Concertante for in E-flat major for Oboe, Clarinet, Horn & Bassoon (Mozart). Four principal members of the FSSO, Kobus Malan (oboe), Danré Strydom (clarinet), Brahm Henkins (bassoon) and Shannon Armer (French horn) are the soloists.

Alexander Fokkens will conduct the FSSO for this concert, which is presented in collaboration with the Odieon School of Muisc
