Symphony Concert


Six of the most talented young musicians in the Free State were chosen to perform with the FSSO as soloists on Thursday 22 March. The FSSO will be conducted by Alexander Fokkens.

More about the soloists


Heinrich Lategan matriculated in 2011 from Sentraal High School, and is currently a first-year student at the UFS, studying music after receiving a prestigious A-list scholarship from the Odeion School of Music. He achieved distinctions in both the Trinity Grade 8 Percussion and Timpani examinations, with respective marks of 96% and 94%. In 2010, Heinrich was the winner of the General Instruments category of the Musicon Soloist Competition. He has performed as percussion soloist with the Free State Symphony Orchestra, Free State Orchestra of Chinese Music (where he also acts as concert master) and Odeion Sinfonia. Currently he is a member of the Odeion Choir, the University of the Free State Choir, and also coaches vocal sections for Juvenes Cantantes, the choir of Sentraal High School. Heinrich is also an arranger of various types of music, as well as being active as a self-taught composer (winning the Azania Music Trophy for best original classical composition in 2009, 2010 and 2011), freelance percussionist, pianist and oboist, and music engraver.

Thapelo Masita started playing the cello at the age of 12. He studied with John Minnaar and Tilla Henkins as a member of the Mangaung String Programme and is currently a student of Anmari van der Westhuizen. Thapelo won many prizes over the years such as the string category prize at the Artscape National Music Competition (2010) and the prize for best performance of a concerto after his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the CPO. He is a two time recipient of the Musica Mundi scholarship for the Musica Mundi International Chamber Music Festival in Brussels. He was winner of the Free State Eisteddfod and won the Trinity exam prize in 2011. He received several awards for exceptional cultural and academic achievements at school and he was winner of the Musicon soloists’ competition. Thapelo attended master classes with great musicians such as Ivry Gitlis, Daniel Rowland, Steven Isserlis, Rudolf Buchbinder, Maxim Vengerof, Gavriel Lipkind, Maria Kliegel, the Harlem Quartet and the Chilingirian Quartet. Thapelo is currently principal cellist of the Bochabela String Orcheatra and the Miagi Youth Orchestra with which he will travel to Europe on a tour to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He is planning to study cello in the USA.

Maja van Dyk is 18 jaar oud en ‘n musiekstudent aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat. Haar eerste instrument is altviool (met Jeanne-Louise Moolman as dosent) en perkussie haar tweede.  Sy het al verskeie trofeë by o.a. Overberg-, Helderberg- en Stellenbosch Eisteddfods ontvang en by pryswennerskonserte opgetree; o.a. in 2011 trofeë vir Beste Altviolis en Beste Bach voordrag in Stellenbosch.  Sy slaag al haar UNISA praktiese eksamens met meer as 80% en in 2011 wen sy UNISA se nasionale graad 8 beurskompetisie. Sy ontvang ook in 2011 musiekstudie-beursaanbiedings van twee vooraanstaande universiteite. Sy neem ook gereeld aan kamermusiek- en orkeskursusse deel: Franschhoek Mountain Chamber Music Festival,  Stellenbosch Internasionale Kamermusiekfees, MIAGI (2009 – 2011; toer in 2009 na Duitsland om op te tree by die young.euro.classic – European Music Summer Festival), South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO)  (2009 – 2010 onderskeidelik sub- en leier van die altviole), en toer in Junie 2011 op uitnodiging saam met Hoërmeisieskool Bloemhof strykorkes na Oos-Europa. Maja was ook leier van Hoërskool Overberg se Marimba Magic groep en lid van Viva!; die skool se musiekensemble, sowel as FESTA, ‘n ensemble van vyf wat gereeld by funksies, troues en konserte opgetree het en twee CD’s opgeneem het (in 2008 & 2010/2011).

Boitumelo (Tumi) Ntantiso started singing at an early age when she was still at school at the Lereko High School in Bloemfontein under Mrs L. NQATA of the Bel Canto Singers. After school Boitumelo took part in several competitions at Potchefstroom where she became an Express Winner and in 2010 she came second in the Soprano devision at the Musicon Singing Competition. She sang the role of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana for Opera Free State and performed with the Opera Africa production of Princess Magogo on tour to Norway. Currently she is part of the new Diploma in Vocal studies at the Odeion School of Music under the supervision of Peet van Heerden.

Carmi Viljoen is tans besig met haar B.Mus Honneurs-graad aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat en is ‘n student van Denise Sutton.  In 2004 ontvang sy die Hennie Joubert-prys vir die beste uitslae nasionaal in Unisa Graad 7 (viool).  In 2005 het sy die Interlochen Arts Camp bygewoon, waar sy ‘n lid was van die Wêreld Jeug Simfonieorkes.  Carmi was in 2007 die konsertmeester van die Vrystaat Jeug Simfonieorkes en is tans lid van die Vrystaatse Simfonieorkes.  Sy was in 2006, 2008 en 2009 lid van die Nasionale Jeugorkes, en het na Duitsland getoer om in Bonn en Berlyn aan die jaarlikse Beethovenfees te gaan deelneem. Carmi het ook al as solis saam met die Odeion Sinfonia, Vrystaatse Simfonieorkes en die Vrystaat Jeug Simfonieorkes opgetree. In 2011 het sy ‘n eretoekenning van die Kunstetrust vir die beste persentasie vir praktiese musiekvakke in B.Mus. aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat ontvang. Tans is sy die leier van die Odeion Sinfonia en die Junior Odeion Strykkwartet wat in 2010 die wenners was van die Kamermusiek-kategorie  by die Nasionale ATKV Klassieke musiekkompetisie en  kategorie-wenners by die Nasionale Ensemble kompetisie in 2011.  Die Junior Odeion Strykkwartet was ook gekies om in Augustus 2011 Meesterklasse in Apeldoorn (Nederland) by te woon - ‘n eer wat jaarliks slegs 40 musikante wêreldwyd te beurt val.

Caryn Reed (15) lives in Bethlehem. She travels to Pretoria for lessons with Claudine van Breda. She has received numerous awards and prizes at various eisteddfods and music festivals. She has been awarded the UNISA Hennie Joubert Merit award for 7 consecutive years. This year, she received 97% for UNISA practical Gr 7. She has been overall winner 3 times in the various age groups at the Artstrust National Piano Competition. During 2006, she competed internationally in the Czech Republic. In 2009, at the age of 14, she won the u/18 category at the Grahamstown Youth National Music Festival. Caryn participated in the Sanlam National Music Competition since the age of 8, reaching the finals several times. She already won the piano category at the age of 10. In 2007, she received the Gold Medal as OVERALL WINNER. She has performed several piano concertos with various symphony orchestras. In 2009, although she was the youngest participant, she reached the semi finals at the Artscape National Music Competition and received the prize for the most promising candidate not to reach the finals. Caryn is passionate about her music and wishes to make it her career.
